A computational model of visual analogies in design
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present an analysis of the work of human participants in addressing design problems by analogy. We describe a computer program, called Galatea, that simulates the visual input and output of four experimental participants. Since Galatea is an operational computer program, it makes specific commitments about the visual representations and reasoning it uses for analogical transfer. In particular, Galatea provides a computational model of how human designers might be generating new designs by incremental transfer of the problem-solving procedure used in previous design cases. 2009 Elsevier B.V. A Cognitive Model of Visual Analogical Problem-Solving Transfer
Complex problem solving typically involves the generation of a procedure consisting of an ordered sequence of steps. Analogical reasoning is one strategy for solving complex problems, and visual reasoning is another. Visual analogies pertain to analogies based only on visual knowledge. In this paper, we describe the use of Galatea, a computational model of visual analogies in problem solving, t...
متن کاملJust Noticeable Difference Estimation Using Visual Saliency in Images
Due to some physiological and physical limitations in the brain and the eye, the human visual system (HVS) is unable to perceive some changes in the visual signal whose range is lower than a certain threshold so-called just-noticeable distortion (JND) threshold. Visual attention (VA) provides a mechanism for selection of particular aspects of a visual scene so as to reduce the computational loa...
متن کاملArchitects and Engineers Differences: A comparison between problem solving performances of architects and engineers in the ideation phase of an analogy-based design
This study examines how analogy affects problem-solving in ideation phase of design among architects and engineers. For this purpose, a design problem was given to master and Ph.D. students of engineering and architecture. They were given two optional analogy sources to choose and be inspired by one. From the analysis of design sessions, using different coding groups and the application of the ...
متن کاملGraph-based Visual Saliency Model using Background Color
Visual saliency is a cognitive psychology concept that makes some stimuli of a scene stand out relative to their neighbors and attract our attention. Computing visual saliency is a topic of recent interest. Here, we propose a graph-based method for saliency detection, which contains three stages: pre-processing, initial saliency detection and final saliency detection. The initial saliency map i...
متن کاملDynamic Imagery: A Computational Model of Motion and Visual Analogy
This paper describes DIVA (Dynamic Imagery for Visual Analogy), a computational model of visual imagery based on the scene graph, a powerful representational structure widely used in computer graphics. Scene graphs make possible the visual display of complex objects, including the motions of individual objects. Our model combines a semantic-network memory system with computational procedures ba...
